New dry shop opens doors in Piraeus
A new dry-chartering company, Aquavita International, has set up shop in Piraeus, bringing former eastern-bloc trading houses to Greek owners.
Company head Evgeniy Lavrenko is a former major shareholder and co-founder of ship operator Industrial Carriers. Before that he was an employee of Metalinvest. With strong links to the former Eastern Bloc trading houses, Lavrenko says Aquavita has already begun chartering in bulkers for steel products, iron-ore, grains and fertiliser cargoes.
In November, Lavrenko says the company fixed three bulkers for spot voyages and another five so far in December. Eastern traders, he adds, do not work long-term contracts, so Aquavita is set up for spot work.
The new outfit also includes Constantin Varouxakis, fresh from AGA in Paris. Varouxakis came to Greece as recent changes in the dry-cargo chartering scene are seeing a number of cargo charterers weighing their options.
The company also employs Yannis Tsellos, who has been working in the Greek dry-chartering scene for over 30years, including at Belnav Inc.
Lavrenko says Aquavita is looking to expand to a fleet base of 15 to 20 bulkers within the next few years and is already looking to increase its staff numbers.
